The Shorkie is a designer breed created from the cross between Yorkshire Terriers and Shih Tzu. The objective was to create a good-looking lapdog with a high intelligence and friendliness.
The coat can be black and tan, red, tan, cream, black, blue or a combination of these colors. The size varies depending on the size of the parents’ breeds. Puppies are usually very small.
Shorkie is energetic and friendly, loyal, playful, affectionate and a very good watchdog. It is friendly with children and other pets if it is early socialized and correctly trained. It has the tendency to become attached to its owner and it is upset if it is left alone for long periods. Furthermore, it has the tendency to bark excessively and to adopt destructive behavior.
The training is easy if the trainer is gentle and patient. Shorkie can become stubborn, shut down and ignore the trainer if this one applies harsh training methods. To educate it properly, a calm and upbeat attitude with exuberant praise and treats are requested.
Shorkie can adapt to many environmental settings, including a house or an apartment.
The soft and long coat needs to be brushed daily to avoid tangle. Bath your Shorkie once per month or when needed.
Shorkie is energetic and playful and has to be exercised on a regular basis. Several walks per day or play sessions with other pets should keep its fitness. Exercise will help it consume its energy, too. It is important to be early socialized and to be in contact with other puppies in order to become a well-rounded dog. Protect it from cold and hot weather as it is sensitive to extreme temperatures.
Feed your Shorkie with high quality food and make sure you include all the nutrients it needs to be healthy.
Shorkie can develop some health problems such as hip dysplasia, eye problems, thyroid problems and hypoglycemia. Take it to vet for regular check-ups and follow a healthy diet. If it is properly cared, Shorkie can live between 12 and 15 years.
