When to Start Heartworm Preventive

August 5, 2015, 1:18 PM
Q: I have a 14 week old yorkie male under 2lbs. How soon can I start giving him heartworm meds and which brand is best? My vet said that he is too small.
A: Most of the products are labeled for 6-9 week minimums. The manufacturers say not to break the tablet or cubes into smaller pieces but I have been doing it on my own dogs for years. All the heartworm preventives work very well, I would suggest either Sentinel or Heartgard as they are the easiest to cut. Let me know what you get and I will help with sizing it and storing the remainder.
