Teething causing odor?

May 26, 2018, 10:13 PM
Q: I have a 7 month old havanese and her breath has been smelling very bad lately. I was petting her and noticed something hard in her fur and it was one of her molars. Is it normal for a dog to still loose teeth at 7 months old and could that be the smell?
A: Complete replacement of alll temporary teeth is usually done by 8 months. During the replacement there are open sockets and some seepage of blood both of which lead to increased bacterial growth and the odors associated with that. There is not anything you can do to significantly change that except using oral rinses to reduce bacterial growth.
